Learn how SAT security protects test integrity.
Test Security and Fairness
The College Board has implemented comprehensive security protocols to ensure the integrity and fairness of the SAT. These measures span the entire testing process—from preparation to post-exam procedures—aiming to provide a secure and equitable environment for all test-takers.
Digital Test Distribution
Test content for the Digital SAT is securely stored and transmitted just before the exam begins, reducing the risk of unauthorized access.
Photo Identification
Test-takers must upload a recent photo during registration and present a matching, valid photo ID on test day to verify their identity.
Device Requirements
Students are required to use approved devices with the Bluebook™ testing application installed. This ensures a standardized, secure testing platform for all examinees.
Bluebook™ Application
The official Bluebook™ testing app locks down the device during the exam, preventing access to other applications, websites, or files.
Proctoring and Monitoring
Trained proctors oversee the testing environment using specialized monitoring tools. They monitor student progress and report any irregularities immediately.
Prohibited Items
Electronic devices, notes, and any unauthorized materials are strictly forbidden in the testing area, effectively reducing opportunities for cheating.
Answer Submission
Responses are submitted via the Bluebook™ app, which requires an internet connection at both the start and the end of the test. In the event of connectivity issues, students have until 11:59 p.m. local time the following day to submit their answers.
Data Analysis
The College Board carefully analyzes test data to detect irregularities such as unusual answer patterns, which may indicate attempts to cheat.
Reporting Violations
Both students and educators have access to official channels for confidentially reporting any suspected security breaches.
Violating SAT security policies can result in serious repercussions, including:
Score Cancellation
Invalidating test scores without a refund.
Test Center Dismissal
Removal from the testing center during the exam.
Future Testing Bans
Prohibition from taking future College Board exams.
Institutional Notification
Informing schools and colleges about the violation, potentially impacting future academic opportunities.
Legal Action
In severe instances, legal proceedings may be initiated against the offender.
