The SAT primarily tests three relationship families: addition (same‑direction reinforcement), contrast (pivot, limit, or exception), and cause‑effect (reason or result). Each family has its own set of transition words that signal that specific logical link.
The QRT is a three‑step routine: (1) paraphrase the first sentence in a few words, (2) forecast what the next sentence must do relative to the first (add, but, so, then), and (3) eliminate any answer not in that family before selecting the best match. This method shrinks decision time by focusing on logic first.
Both are contrastive, but “however” introduces a counterpoint with analytical neutrality, while “nevertheless” concedes a point and then reaffirms the original claim. Use “however” for a simple pivot and “nevertheless” when you’re acknowledging a drawback before pressing forward.
Use “therefore” for a strong, global conclusion that seals the paragraph’s argument; use “thus” for a softer, more local or procedural result. If the sentence summarizes the whole paragraph’s reasoning, “therefore” is the safer choice.
Sentence‑level transitions guide readers within a paragraph (e.g., also, however, therefore), maintaining flow between individual ideas. Paragraph‑level transitions orient readers to a new subtopic while preserving continuity with the previous text, often reusing keywords and signaling a shift (e.g., nevertheless, in contrast).
Avoid double signaling (e.g., “because… therefore”), watch punctuation for sentence‑adverb transitions, and don’t rely on tone or fancy vocabulary alone—logic and relationship type come first. Also, choose the narrower‑scope option unless the sentence clearly summarizes the entire paragraph.
