In SAT Reading, you should eliminate any answer choice containing extreme or absolute language such as always, never, entirely, impossible, prove, or guarantee. These absolutes are rarely supported by the passage unless explicitly stated. Additionally, watch for off-scope claims that introduce new concepts not discussed in the text, and half-right answers that start accurately but add an unproven claim at the end.
On SAT Math, POE prevents unnecessary calculations by first removing options that violate constraints. Before computing, check for sign or parity violations (eliminate negatives if the variable must be positive), estimate magnitude to discard order-of-magnitude errors, and back-solve by plugging answer choices back into the problem. This approach works especially well on the non-calculator section where you can eliminate 2-3 options through factor checks and bounding before any arithmetic.
Common trap patterns include extreme language (always, never), off-scope claims (new concepts not in the passage), half-right/half-wrong answers (first clause true but second adds unsupported claims), grammar violations (agreement, pronoun, modifier errors), wrong transition relationships (cause vs contrast mismatches), unit or domain errors, and computation traps that look right but fail a quick plug-in check. The counter-move for each is systematic elimination: cross out anything that violates these checks before selecting the survivor.
POE helps manage time pressure by providing structured forward motion when you feel stuck. Adopt micro-deadlines such as 50-75 seconds for Reading and Writing items and about 90 seconds for Math questions. When time is tight, aim to eliminate at least two options before guessing among the survivors—this raises expected value compared with random guessing. Recording eliminations as X, X, ?, ✓ in your scratch work also helps you identify which cues you catch fastest during review.
A consistent 2-week drill plan works well for building POE muscle memory. Alternate focus across SAT sections: practice scope and evidence elimination for Reading, transition matching and grammar rule checks for Writing, and constraint kills with back-solving for Math. Each session should last 35-45 minutes with a focus on labeling choices X/?/✓ and recording eliminations. After Week 2, repeat with fresh problem sets to sustain and extend your gains.
When POE narrows to two choices, re-read only the key lines and the question stem, then ask which choice is exactly supported. For Reading, check for scope edges—kill the broader option unless the passage explicitly warrants it. For Writing, prefer the option that preserves intended meaning and matches the precise logical relationship. For Math, run a quick plug-in or unit check, and verify the survivor answers the exact quantity requested, distinguishing between similar concepts like mean versus median.
