What is the Clause Test for SAT punctuation?
The Clause Test asks whether the text before a punctuation mark is a complete sentence and whether the text after it is also a complete sentence. If both sides are independent clauses, punctuation such as a period, semicolon, colon, or dash (under specific conditions) may be used; a comma alone cannot join them. If either side is dependent, the punctuation must attach, not separate, the parts.
