From factored form y = a(x - r1)(x - r2), the zeros are at x = r1 and x = r2. The axis of symmetry is the vertical line halfway between the zeros, given by x = (r1 + r2)/2. This provides the x‑coordinate of the vertex without expanding the expression.
The discriminant D = b^2 - 4ac tells how many real solutions the equation ax^2 + bx + c = 0 has. If D > 0 there are two distinct real solutions, D = 0 gives a double root, and D < 0 means no real solutions. This classification can be done without solving the equation.
For a quadratic in the form y = ax^2 + bx + c, first factor out a from the x‑terms if a ≠ 1. Then add and subtract (b/2)^2 to create a perfect square trinomial, rewrite it as (x + b/(2a))^2, and adjust the constant term accordingly to obtain y = a(x - h)^2 + k. The resulting h and k give the vertex directly.
Factored form is most efficient when the problem asks for zeros, intercepts, or sign analysis, because the roots are read directly from the factors. It also lets you find the axis of symmetry by averaging the roots, which can answer turning‑point questions without expanding the expression.
The axis of symmetry of a parabola is the line x = h; any two points that are equidistant from this line have the same y‑value. By recognizing this symmetry you can determine the value at one point and know it for the other, eliminating the need for repeated algebraic steps.
