To fix faulty comparisons, ensure you compare like with like—a noun must compare to a noun, a clause to a clause. Use 'that' or 'those' when needed to complete comparisons, and avoid comparing different categories (like paintings to a person) or omitting necessary words that clarify what is being compared.
Key signal words include coordinating conjunctions (and, or, but, nor, for, yet, so), correlative pairs (either...or, neither...nor, both...and, not only...but also, whether...or), comparative structures (more...than, as...as, rather than), and preposition or verb tense series. Colon or dash lists also require parallel items.
Use 'like' before nouns or pronouns (like many artists), and use 'as' before clauses (as many artists do). The SAT frequently tests this distinction by placing a clause after 'like' to trap students who confuse the two.
A dangling comparison occurs when the thing being compared is not explicitly stated, leading to illogical comparisons. For example, 'Unlike whales, the respiratory system of dolphins...' compares whales to a respiratory system. Fix it by making both subjects explicit: 'Unlike whales, dolphins have a respiratory system that...' so humans compare to humans.
Without 'other,' comparisons can create illogical exclusions. For instance, 'The café serves better coffee than any bakery' implies the café is not a bakery. Adding 'other'—'better coffee than any other bakery'—keeps categories aligned so the café is properly compared to other bakeries, not excluded from the category.
The six-step method is: locate the main verb and subject (the spine), bracket the series or pair and label each form, force a consistent pattern (noun, infinitive, or clause), check that correlative pairs attach to equivalent elements, read for rhythm to detect imbalance, and re-scan for hidden tense or preposition shifts.
Common comparison errors include mismatched category errors (comparing different kinds of things), missing word errors (omitting 'that/those/one/ones'), like/as confusion, dangling comparisons with ambiguous references, and scope creep where modifiers expand the comparison beyond intended meaning.
