What are paired passages on the SAT and why does the test include them?
Paired passages are two related texts that appear together on the SAT Reading and Writing section to test your ability to synthesize information across sources rather than extract details from a single text. The test uses paired passages because cross-text reasoning reflects the kind of analytical thinking required in college courses, labs, seminars, and research assignments. The Digital SAT no longer includes subject tests, making this cross-text reasoning within the general Reading and Writing domain an even more important proxy for skills that were previously distributed across specialized assessments.
