Tone questions measure the author's attitude, anchored in diction and qualifiers like 'somewhat' or 'cautiously.' The common trap in all three is overstatement.
Create decision rules that convert reasoning into action, such as setting a 30–40 second cap for questions requiring cross-referencing before marking and skipping. Use a two-pass strategy: first pass for direct-evidence and vocabulary-in-context questions, second pass for global purpose and inference clusters. Use micro-checkpoints like 'by minute 25, I'm at Q26' to avoid end-of-section rushes where accuracy collapses.
Signal words reveal the author's logical structure: 'however' or 'nonetheless' indicate contrast, 'therefore' or 'thus' signal conclusions, and 'for example' introduces evidence. Words like 'may,' 'tends,' or 'often' soften claims. When a choice mirrors the passage's modality—its certainty level—it often outperforms a choice that amplifies the claim. Underlining one signal per paragraph helps you track the argument rhythm without cluttering your reading.
