This is a context exam, not a vocabulary test—clarity and exactness matter more than sophisticated synonyms.

This systematic approach helps eliminate options that fail on any of the three criteria.
Common traps include near-synonyms with subtle meaning differences, connotation shifts that flip the passage's attitude, register mismatches (too casual or too inflated), false friends like effect/affect or continual/continuous, and precision errors where verbs like prove, suggest, indicate, or imply carry different evidentiary weights.
Collocation refers to words that naturally go together in English. The SAT penalizes non-idiomatic pairings even when individual word meanings are correct. For example, we 'draw a conclusion' and 'issue an apology,' not 'make up a conclusion' or 'disseminate an apology.' Recognizing standard academic pairings helps eliminate incorrect options.
Use a five-step method: read two sentences before and after the blank, paraphrase what the sentence needs, eliminate by meaning first, check tone and register second, then confirm collocation last. With practice, this routine takes 60–90 seconds per question and prevents being misled by attractive but incorrect synonyms.
Precision beats pretension because the exam rewards the option that says exactly what the author means—no more and no less. Substituting a longer or more sophisticated word can distort the intended idea. For example, 'used' is often better than 'utilized,' and 'proposed' may fit better than 'postulated' when the sentence simply means 'suggested.'
