The anchor phrase method involves identifying a rare or distinctive token in the question—such as an unusual noun, proper name, or specific number—and using it to quickly locate the approximate region of the answer. Once you find the anchor, read one sentence above and one below since evidence answers often depend on adjacent sentences that present claims, reasons, examples, or conclusions together.
Directional scanning is a movement plan for your eyes after identifying a nearby landmark. Use downward scanning when your anchor is a topic sentence or claim since elaboration follows. Use upward scanning when the anchor is a conclusion since supporting evidence typically precedes it. Bracketing—marking one sentence above and below your hottest line—defines a tight window where you force yourself to find or falsify the answer.
Treat paired questions as a single composite task using a two-pass workflow. In Pass 1, read the first question stem and predict the answer type before looking at choices. In Pass 2, peek at the evidence question and ask yourself where the test writers would reasonably expect you to find justification. Verify the pair against the passage in under 25 seconds, and if verification exceeds that, immediately reset by scanning alternative evidence options.
Common traps include attractive paraphrases that echo the topic but inject unstated claims, tone drift where reasonable content is paired with unjustified emotional modifiers, scope inflation where 'some cases' becomes 'all cases,' background camouflage where sentences set the scene without containing actual claims, data misalignment where text and charts show opposite directions, and echo decoys where similar lines are quoted but only one completes the logic.
A practical target is inspecting only about 30-40% of the lines when hunting evidence. For a 70-line passage with 10 questions, this works out to roughly 2-3 lines per question on average. Budget about 8-12 seconds to locate evidence and 10-15 seconds to verify. If you exceed this budget, reset immediately with a fresh anchor or choose the next most plausible evidence range rather than persisting stubbornly.
Line references test your scope control. Start by reading the entire sentence containing the cited line number plus one sentence on either side. If the reference slices through the middle of a sentence, reconstruct the full sentence first since punctuation determines clause relationships. Watch for discourse markers like 'however' or 'therefore' that telegraph whether the cited line is advancing, illustrating, or revising a claim.
Contrast markers like 'however,' 'yet,' and 'although' often preface high-value evidence where authors unveil their stance. Causal connectors like 'because' and 'therefore' signal a direct claim-reason link. Pronouns and demonstratives like 'this,' 'that,' and 'it' compress earlier material—trace them backward to restore full meaning. Appositives package definitions compactly, and parallel structures or lists often illustrate generalizations explicitly enough to qualify as evidence.
