FAST+ is a five‑step process—Frame the task, Anchor meaning, Scan choices, Test in context, and Plus check for concision—that you can run in under a minute. It guides you to restate the sentence, decide the exact idea needed, eliminate off‑tone or off‑register options, and confirm the choice fits the surrounding context, cutting decision time and reducing errors.
Precision asks whether a word expresses the exact meaning required; tone asks whether the word sounds neutral, approving, skeptical, etc., given the author’s stance; register deals with the level of formality—academic, journalistic, conversational—and the SAT penalizes choices that don’t match the passage’s voice.
The test often tempts you with pairs such as imply vs. infer, affect vs. effect, economic vs. economical, principal vs. principle, and compose vs. comprise. It also uses tone‑sensitive verbs like boast vs. assert, lament vs. note, and scrutinize vs. consider, where the wrong choice can inject unintended bias or change intensity.
Transitions like however, therefore, and consequently indicate contrast, conclusion, or addition; cause‑and‑effect signals point to causal language; quantifiers adjust claim strength; punctuation marks such as em dashes, colons, and semicolons show relationships between ideas. All of these clues narrow the field by revealing the logical role of the blank.
Common pitfalls include confusing imply vs. infer, mis‑matching tone or register, overstating causality with strong verbs like dictate or guarantee, falling for redundancy traps (each and every, due to the fact that), and ignoring collocations and prepositions that native speakers expect.
Use short nonfiction passages to practice paraphrasing, identify the role of each blank (define, concede, contrast, hedge), and apply the FAST+ method. Review explanations of why wrong options fail—tone, register, causality, redundancy, grammar—and revisit your mistakes regularly to build lasting word‑choice instincts.
