Founded in 1902 as the Western Branch of the Kansas State Normal School, Fort Hays State University is a public university governed by the Kansas Board of Regents and enrolls over 12,800 students across undergraduate and graduate programs on its rural 200‑acre campus. FHSU comprises five colleges—including Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences; Business & Entrepreneurship; Education; Health & Behavioral Sciences; and Science, Technology & Mathematics—and offers more than 60 undergraduate and 20 graduate programs. The university is classified among R1: Doctoral Universities with very high research activity, hosts notable institutes such as the Docking Institute of Public Affairs, and features the Sternberg Museum of Natural History. Its athletic teams, the Tigers, compete in NCAA Division II’s MIAA conference.

Fort Hays State University requires first-year applicants to meet either a minimum high school GPA of 2.25 or submit standardized test scores (ACT composite ≥21 or SAT ERW+M ≥1060). Students with a GPA of 2.25 or higher may choose not to submit SAT/ACT scores, but those falling below that threshold must provide test scores for admission. Official score reports must be sent directly from the testing agency.
