Founded on March 6, 1882, as the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute, VSU is the nation’s first fully state‑supported four‑year HBCU and one of Virginia’s two land‑grant institutions. Accredited by SACSCOC, it enrolls about 5,700 students across seven colleges offering programs in agriculture, business, education, engineering, humanities, natural sciences, and graduate studies. The 236‑acre main campus overlooks the Appomattox River and includes 50+ buildings and a 412‑acre agricultural research facility. VSU is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and competes in NCAA Division II athletics as the Trojans.

Virginia State’s freshman admissions require SAT or ACT scores for applicants under 21 years old and for those seeking merit scholarships, while applicants aged 21 and over may apply test‑optional. Submitted scores are superscored, and writing sections are not considered in the review process.
