Established in 1974, UHD enrolls 14,105 students across four academic colleges offering 45 bachelor's and 12 master's degree programs, with over 67,000 alumni. The campus spans 40 acres in downtown Houston near historic Allen's Landing and features eight buildings and satellite locations. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, UHD awards more than 2,700 degrees annually. It is recognized for its urban campus, diverse student body, and comprehensive degree offerings in business, humanities, public service, and sciences.

UHD freshmen may choose to apply with or without SAT or ACT scores; the test-optional policy applies to both domestic and international first-time freshmen, but freshman-transfer and GED/homeschool students must submit scores. Applicants admitted without test scores still need to fulfill Texas Success Initiative requirements prior to enrollment.
