Founded in 1864 as the first institution for advanced education of the deaf and hard of hearing, Gallaudet University enrolls over 1,500 students, including undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education learners. The 99‑acre campus in Northeast D.C. is officially bilingual, offering instruction in both American Sign Language and English, and features facilities such as the I. King Jordan Student Academic Center, Sorenson Language and Communication Center, and the National Deaf Life Museum. Recognized as a leading research university for deaf studies, Gallaudet has historic roots in Deaf culture and continues to advance scholarship through programs in ASL-interpreting, psychology, and communication studies. Graduate programs admit hearing students, fostering a diverse campus community while preserving Deaf leadership and representation among faculty and administrators .

This university requires SAT Scores for some programs.
Gallaudet University requires SAT or ACT scores for freshman admission; however, applicants who have completed 12 credit hours of college‑level English and mathematics or a total of 30 college credits may have the testing requirement waived. The university also superscores multiple SAT or ACT test dates for merit scholarship consideration .
