Founded in 1956 through the merger of several institutions, UWM enrolls over 22,700 undergraduates and 6,000 graduate students across 15 colleges and schools, offering 94 bachelor’s, 64 master’s, and 33 doctoral programs. Classified as a Carnegie R1 Doctoral University with very high research activity, UWM hosts the only U.S. School of Freshwater Sciences, the Zilber School of Public Health, and a renowned College of Engineering & Applied Science. Its 104‑acre urban campus features the Golda Meir Library, the UWM Panther Arena, and extensive community engagement through partnerships in arts, health, and industry. UWM is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and maintains a 16:1 student–faculty ratio.

UWM does not require ACT or SAT scores for admission; applicants may optionally submit them (ACT code 4658; SAT code 1473) for holistic review and course placement in math and English, but scores will not affect admission decisions.
