Founded in 1957 by the Waterloo College Associate Faculties and chartered as a university in 1959 by the Legislature of Ontario, the University of Waterloo occupies a 404‑hectare main campus adjacent to Waterloo Park and operates three satellite campuses. It comprises six faculties and 13 faculty‑based schools, offers over 100 undergraduate programs, and operates the world’s largest post‑secondary co‑operative education program with more than 20,000 students in paid work terms annually. A member of the U15 group, Waterloo is renowned for its research institutes like the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Institute for Quantum Computing, and for entrepreneurial initiatives such as the Velocity incubator. The campus blends modern research facilities with extensive green spaces and collaborations with industry partners in the Waterloo Region’s innovation ecosystem.

Undergraduate admission at Waterloo is based on secondary school grades and program prerequisites; standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT are not required or considered. Applicants may submit Advanced Placement exam results for advanced standing but are not obligated to do so. Admission averages vary by program and are published in program‑specific requirements.
