Founded in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, UIW enrolls 9,191 students across its main campus and international extension sites. The university comprises 11 colleges and schools, including pharmacy, nursing, business, and osteopathic medicine, and maintains SACSCOC accreditation. It is the largest Catholic university in Texas, with global outreach through campuses in Mexico and a study center in Strasbourg, France. The Cardinals compete in NCAA Division I Southland Conference.
