Founded on March 30, 1910, as Mississippi Normal College, USM became a research university offering bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees. The main campus in Hattiesburg spans one square mile and enrolls over 14,600 students, with a second campus at Gulf Park in Long Beach. Classified as an R1 institution, it houses five satellite teaching and research sites, including the John C. Stennis Space Center and Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. Accredited by SACS, USM offers more than 189 programs and fields NCAA Division I athletics as the Golden Eagles in the Sun Belt Conference.
