Founded in 1787, Pitt is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States and a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). Its urban Pittsburgh campus is home to around 28,000 undergraduate and graduate students across seventeen schools and colleges, including the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, Swanson School of Engineering, and School of Medicine. The campus is anchored by the 42‑story Cathedral of Learning, a Gothic Revival landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Pitt’s test‑optional policy allows first‑year and transfer applicants to choose whether or not to submit SAT or ACT scores for admission through Fall 2028; scores are not required, and applications are evaluated holistically. Proof of English proficiency remains required for international students.
