The University of Nouakchott was founded in 1981 and later merged with the National Institute of Higher Islamic Studies to become the University of Nouakchott Al Aasriya. It is the main institution of higher learning in the country, with faculties in law, economics, arts, humanities, and formerly, sciences (which have been moved to a new university). Instruction is in both Arabic and French.
