Established in 1963 as the newest campus of the University of Missouri System, UMSL is classified as a Tier 1 national research university, seeded on the former Bellerive Country Club grounds and offering undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and professional programs across its six academic units . The university enrolls more than 15,000 students from across the nation and world and operates a 350‑acre urban campus spanning the municipalities of Bellerive, Bel-Nor, and Normandy . Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission with an AACSB‑accredited business school—the only public institution in the St. Louis area with that accreditation—UMSL emphasizes research, community engagement, and inclusive excellence . Its athletic teams, the Tritons, compete in NCAA Division II’s GLVC . The campus also hosts America’s National Churchill Museum onsite in a reconstructed Christopher Wren church .

UMSL has adopted a test-optional admission policy for first-time college applicants for spring, summer, and fall terms, allowing applicants to choose whether to submit SAT or ACT scores; homeschooled students must submit standardized test scores, and international applicants must meet English proficiency requirements. Test scores, if submitted, may be used for placement or scholarship consideration .
