Established in 1886 as the Delaware Conference Academy, UMES enrolls 2,840 students and offers 40 undergraduate and 15 graduate programs through its School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences, School of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health, and College of Business and Technology. The rural 1,138‑acre campus includes a research farm and the Paul S. Sarbanes Coastal Ecology Center, and UMES is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Its Hawks athletics teams compete in NCAA Division I MEAC, and the university is known for its STEM initiatives and maritime studies.

This university requires SAT Scores for some programs.
UMES requires SAT or ACT scores for applicants out of high school less than two years with a GPA below 3.4, while applicants with a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or above or those out of high school for more than two years may apply without test scores. This conditional policy supports holistic review tailored to academic readiness.
