Chartered in 1957 through the merger of three institutions dating back to 1877, UHart enrolls over 6,000 students across seven schools—including the Barney School of Business, The Hartt School, and the Hartford Art School—on its 350‑acre campus spanning Hartford, West Hartford, and Bloomfield. Accredited by NECHE and a member of the Space‑Grant consortium, the university offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs emphasizing experiential learning, internships, and performance opportunities. Its suburban campus boasts facilities such as the Mort & Irma Handel Performing Arts Center and the Chase Arena, and supports study abroad, honors, and community engagement initiatives.

For first‑year applicants, ACT or SAT scores are optional and used holistically; applicants may opt out without penalty. Scores are also optional for portfolio‑based programs and considered for scholarship and placement. However, education majors must submit SAT/ACT or Praxis scores by their second year, and international applicants who waive SAT/ACT must provide TOEFL or IELTS results.
