Tracing its roots to a Free School founded in 1743 and chartered as Delaware College in 1769, UD became the state’s land‑grant institution in 1869 and now enrolls over 24,221 students (fall 2023) across ten colleges . The 1,996‑acre main campus in Newark is complemented by satellite facilities in Dover, Georgetown, Wilmington, and Lewes, offering more than 160 bachelor’s, 130 master’s, and 60 doctoral programs . Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, UD holds Sea Grant, Space Grant, and Land Grant affiliations and is classified as R1: Very High Research Activity . Signature strengths include engineering, business, sciences, and the Honors College, supported by extensive research labs and interdisciplinary institutes . Athletics compete as the Fightin’ Blue Hens in NCAA Division I, transitioning to FBS football and joining Conference USA in 2024 .

Since fall 2017 UD has operated test‑optional admissions, allowing applicants to apply without SAT or ACT scores and focusing on high school performance, extracurriculars, and holistic factors . Submitted SAT/ACT scores are superscored for composite results, with no writing or subject test requirements, and are used for placement and scholarship review . International applicants are not required to submit standardized test scores but must demonstrate English proficiency via TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent exams .
