Founded in 1897 as Branch Normal School, Southern Utah University now enrolls 15,444 students (fall 2024) across six colleges, offering more than 140 undergraduate and 19 graduate programs on its scenic 129-acre campus. Classified as an R2: Doctoral University, SUU fields 17 NCAA Division I athletic teams known as the Thunderbirds and is recognized for low student debt and experiential learning opportunities including the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts and the Human Performance Lab.

Since the 2021–2022 academic year, SUU has a permanent test-optional admissions policy: SAT and ACT scores are not required for freshman admission or merit scholarships, though applicants may submit scores for placement or scholarship consideration if they choose.
