Founded in 1880, Southern University and A&M College is the largest historically black college or university in Louisiana and the flagship institution of the Southern University System. The urban campus spans 512 acres along the Mississippi River and hosts six degree‑granting colleges offering programs in arts and humanities, business, sciences and engineering, social sciences, agriculture, nursing, and allied health, as well as the Southern University Law Center on campus. Accredited by SACS and a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, Southern University is classified as a space‑grant institution and is renowned for its Human Jukebox marching band and strong SWAC athletic traditions. Notable campus landmarks include the J.S. Clark Administration Building, Camille Stivers Shade/Black Heritage Library, and the A.W. Mumford Stadium, reinforcing a legacy of academic excellence and cultural heritage since the 19th century.
