Founded in 1872 as Ashland Academy and renamed Southern Oregon University in 1997, SOU enrolls 5,371 students (4,368 undergraduates and 1,003 graduates) on its 175-acre campus just 14 miles from the California border. Classified as an R2 doctoral university, it offers more than 60 bachelor’s and 30 master’s degree programs across six schools, and reported a $38 million endowment in 2021. SOU supports student life through NCAA Division II athletics as the Raiders, hosts Jefferson Public Radio’s headquarters, and has five LEED-certified facilities emphasizing sustainability.
