Founded in 1884 as the Philadelphia Textile School, the institution evolved into Philadelphia Textile Institute (1942–1961) and Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science (1961–1999). It achieved university status in 1999 as Philadelphia University and enrolled approximately 3,700 students from over 45 states and 40 countries before merging with Thomas Jefferson University in 2017. Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, its East Falls and Center City campuses featured design studios, research labs, and the Paul J. Gutman Library. The university emphasized experiential learning and design thinking, offering degrees through the Colleges of Architecture & the Built Environment, Design Engineering & Commerce, and Sciences, Health & Liberal Arts.
