Founded in 1964, NSU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and enrolls over 20,000 students across 14 colleges offering more than 150 degree programs in fields including health professions, business, education, and the sciences . Its 314‑acre main campus at 3301 College Ave features the Alvin Sherman Library, specialized research centers, and the NSU Health Clinics, and the university operates multiple regional campuses throughout Florida as well as online and international sites . NSU is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity,” reflecting its strong research focus in marine science, biomedical engineering, and health care innovation, and the NSU Sharks compete in NCAA Division II’s Sunshine State Conference .

NSU employs a test‑optional admissions policy for undergraduate applicants; students may choose to submit SAT or ACT scores (NSU superscores both exams), which are used for admission and scholarship decisions but are not mandatory . Starting Fall 2026, NSU plans to reinstate standardized exam requirements as part of a phased return from COVID‑19 test‑optional policies, with recommended scores of at least 1040 SAT or 19 ACT for competitive applications . Graduate and professional programs have additional requirements such as GRE or program‑specific exams, and international students must demonstrate English proficiency via TOEFL or IELTS .
