Founded in 1881 as Newark Technical School, NJIT is located in the University Heights district of Newark, New Jersey. As of fall 2022, NJIT enrolls 12,332 students—9,019 undergraduates and 3,313 graduate students—across six colleges offering 51 undergraduate and 71 graduate programs. Classified as an R1: Doctoral University with very high research activity and accredited by MSCHE, NJIT hosts facilities such as the Big Bear Solar Observatory and Owens Valley Radio Observatory. The urban 48‑acre campus features modern buildings including the Central King Building, the Otto H. York Center for Environmental Engineering, and the Rutgers–NJIT Collaborative Health Sciences Center. Designated as both an AANAPISI and an Hispanic-serving institution, NJIT emphasizes diversity, inclusion, and community engagement, and its Highlanders compete in NCAA Division I America East athletics.

First‑year applicants for Fall 2025, Spring 2026, and Fall 2026 may choose to omit SAT/ACT scores; however, applicants to the Albert Dorman Honors College and accelerated programs must submit standardized test results.
