Founded in 1923 as South Park Junior College and renamed in 1932, Lamar University now enrolls around 17,900 students (Fall 2024) across undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. The 299-acre urban campus in Beaumont features the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center, Mary and John Gray Library, and Provost Umphrey Stadium, all situated along the Neches River. LU comprises seven academic colleges—including Engineering, Business, Fine Arts, and the Reaud Honors College—and offers 96 bachelor’s, 50 master’s, and eight doctoral degrees with a student–faculty ratio of 17:1. Accredited by SACSCOC and classified as a Doctoral Research University, LU is also a Space-Grant institution and partners internationally with Kunming University of Science and Technology. Athletic teams, the Cardinals and Lady Cardinals, compete in NCAA Division I’s Southland Conference.

Lamar University operates a test-optional admissions policy: submission of SAT or ACT scores is not required for first-year admission. Students in the upper 50% of their high school class are guaranteed admission, while those in the lower 50% or unranked are reviewed holistically based on academic transcripts. Official scores may be submitted for scholarship eligibility and placement purposes but have no bearing on admission decisions. International first-year and transfer applicants may also apply without test scores through the same test-optional pathway.
