Founded in 1962 as Lake–Sumter Junior College, LSSC operates its Leesburg, South Lake (Clermont), and Sumter (Sumterville) campuses and has grown to enroll 6,042 students (Fall 2014). Accredited by SACSCOC, the college offers Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science, and Bachelor of Applied Science degrees, as well as technical certificates and workforce training. LSSC participates in DirectConnect to UCF, guaranteeing acceptance and streamlined transfer pathways to the University of Central Florida, and maintains partnerships with local industries to support regional workforce needs.

LSSC practices open-access admissions requiring only a high school diploma or equivalent; SAT or ACT scores are optional and accepted for placement in reading, writing, and math courses in lieu of the P.E.R.T. test, with scores valid for two years. Applicants without test scores must take the P.E.R.T. exam for placement. Official scores should be sent to the Enrollment Service Center at LSSC.
