Founded in 1828 by John Chesamore as Johnson Academy, it became a Vermont state normal school in 1867 and developed into a liberal arts college serving approximately 1,759 students. Accredited by SACSCOC, the rural campus spanned 350 acres and offered undergraduate and graduate programs in liberal arts, education, and natural sciences with a 1:14 faculty-student ratio. On July 1, 2018, it merged with Lyndon State College to create Northern Vermont University; in July 2023, that institution became part of Vermont State University.
