Established on March 22, 1858, as the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm, Iowa State was designated the state’s land‑grant institution in 1864 and renamed Iowa State University of Science and Technology in 1959. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and enrolls over 30,000 students (30,432 in Fall 2024) across its main campus in Ames and regional centers. The university offers more than 100 bachelor’s, 120 master’s, and 80 doctoral programs through eight colleges, including Agriculture and Life Sciences, Engineering, and the Ivy College of Business. Iowa State is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity" and fields NCAA Division I Cyclones athletics in the Big 12 Conference.
