Fisk University, established in 1866 as the Fisk Free Colored School, is the oldest institution of higher education in Nashville and occupies a 40-acre historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The university enrolls about 1,055 students in bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs through its College of Arts & Sciences, College of Behavioral & Social Sciences, and School of Business and Music. Accredited by SACSCOC since 1930, Fisk boasts an 11:1 student-faculty ratio, renowned research in Africana studies, and the famous Fisk Jubilee Singers, who introduced spirituals to global audiences. Notable alumni include W.E.B. Du Bois, John Lewis, and Ida B. Wells.
