Founded in 1911 as East Tennessee State Normal School, ETSU is a public research university classified as R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity. It enrolls approximately 13,586 students in undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across its 340‑acre campus, which includes the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy, and College of Public Health. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, ETSU features a student-faculty ratio of 16:1, extensive study abroad programs, and strong community engagement in the Appalachian region. The Buccaneers compete in NCAA Division I FCS as members of the Southern Conference.

ETSU does not require SAT or ACT scores for freshman admission, but submitted scores are necessary for scholarship consideration, academic placement, and are required by certain competitive programs; test-takers may also opt for the ACCUPLACER placement test in lieu of SAT/ACT scores, and ETSU superscores submitted exams for admissions and scholarships.
