Founded in 1958 as Columbus College, the institution transitioned to a four‑year college in 1965 and was designated Columbus State University in 1996. Today, CSU enrolls over 7,600 students in more than 90 academic disciplines within its College of Arts & Sciences, College of Education & Health Professions, and College of the Arts, and competes in NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference athletics as the Cougars. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) and part of the University System of Georgia, CSU operates both a suburban main campus and the RiverPark Campus in downtown Columbus, home to the Schwob School of Music.

Traditional freshmen must meet a minimum 2.5 GPA and submit SAT scores of at least 440 Evidence‑Based Reading & Writing and 410 Math (or ACT scores of English 17 and Math 17), though SAT/ACT requirements are waived for students completing the Required High School Curriculum with a 3.0 or higher.
