Founded in 1965 as Algoma University College and chartered as an independent university in 2008 under provincial legislation, Algoma U specializes in community‑engaged education and Indigenous partnerships, notably through the Shingwauk Project. Its main campus in Sault Ste. Marie combines historic Shingwauk Hall—formerly a residential school—with modern facilities such as the Arthur A. Wishart Library and the Convergence Centre for biosciences and technology. With additional campuses in Brampton and Timmins, the university serves a diverse student body and maintains membership in Universities Canada and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
